Frequently Asked Questions

What is educational therapy, and how does it compare with tutoring?

While traditional tutoring focuses primarily on the “what” of learning, educational therapy centers the “how” of learning for effective progress and support. Educational therapy is a comprehensive and holistic approach to learning that includes skill development alongside the psychology of your child’s unique learning needs, social-emotional factors, and metacognition. Through this approach, learners will make progress in their academic performance while also better understanding their own learning profile and building overall academic confidence.

What does a typical session look like?

A standard session is 50 minutes in length, held in a 1:1 format with practitioner and student. Each session incorporates evidence-based techniques and is customized to address the individual student’s learning goals and needs. Session length may be adjusted to meet the needs of your child.

Where and when are sessions held?

Location and timing will depend on the needs of the student and current availability. These can be discussed during an initial complementary consultation before choosing to move forward. In general, in-person sessions are held at a pre-agreed upon location such as the student’s home, school, or a separate office setting. Virtual sessions are available for students who may benefit from this option.

What is the recommended frequency of sessions?

The majority of students will make the most significant and consistent progress with at least twice weekly sessions. A frequency of at least one session per week is required for all students who attend Lightbulb Moments during the academic school year. Each student is unique, and we will discuss during the intake process what is right for your child and family.

What is the age of students at Lightbulb Moments?

Lightbulb Moments specializes in supporting students K-8th grade. Some high school students may also be a good fit, particularly in areas related to humanities subjects and executive function. Pre-K students may also participate in sessions for kindergarten readiness support the spring/summer before they begin their kindergarten year.

How will I know if my child is making progress?

Each student who regularly attends Lightbulb Moments will receive two formal progress reports per academic year, shared at the end of each semester (December and May). Each student who participates in summer sessions will receive an end of summer progress report as well. Additional formal progress reports are always welcome to be requested.

Will you speak with my child’s teacher, therapist, evaluator, etc.?

Of course! Educational therapy is often most effective with a team-oriented approach. Each student’s educational therapy plan will include collaboration hours which can be applied to connecting with members of your child’s support team, IEP/504/parent-teacher meeting attendance, etc.

I’m interested in learning more! What’s next?
